Defending champions launch their title defence in commanding fashion as Mandeep Singh scores a hat-trick, Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh hit braces, and veteran midfielder Nilakanta Sharma announces his international retirement.
JALANDHAR, PUNJAB: India began their title defence at the Hero Men’s Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 with a commanding 13–0 victory over Bangladesh at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Tuesday. The hosts dominated the opening match of the tournament, producing an attacking display that established an early statement of intent in front of the home crowd.
Forward Mandeep Singh led the scoring with a hat-trick, while captain Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and vice-captain Hardik Singh contributed two goals each. Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma and Jugraj Singh also found the net as India registered 13 goals without conceding.
The emphatic result gave the defending champions three points and a goal difference of plus 13 at the start of the six-team competition. However, the evening also carried an emotional moment for Indian hockey, with experienced midfielder Nilakanta Sharma announcing that the tournament would be his final appearance for the national team.
India Strike Twice in the Opening Three Minutes
India wasted little time establishing control. Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring in the second minute, converting a penalty corner with a drag-flick. A minute later, Mandeep Singh doubled the advantage with a reverse-hit after receiving a pass from the Indian captain.
Mandeep scored again in the 10th minute, finishing from close range after a move involving Harmanpreet and Abhishek. Shilanand Lakra added India’s fourth goal in the 15th minute following an attacking move involving Sukhjeet Singh and Aditya Arjun Lalage.
India carried their momentum into the second quarter. Abhishek made it 5–0 in the 18th minute, finding space inside the circle before finishing from the left. Nilakanta Sharma extended the lead in the 26th minute with a reverse-stick shot.
India went into half-time with a comfortable 6–0 advantage, having established control through sustained attacking pressure and effective use of scoring opportunities.
Three More Goals Extend India’s Lead
Bangladesh managed longer spells of possession during the third quarter but struggled to contain India’s forward movement and penalty-corner threat.
Dilpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 43rd minute before scoring again from open play a minute later. Harmanpreet then converted another penalty corner in the 44th minute, taking India’s lead to 9–0.
Jugraj Singh added the 10th goal in the 46th minute, converting another penalty corner early in the final quarter. Mandeep completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute, turning in a cross from Aditya Arjun Lalage.
Hardik Singh completed the scoring with two goals in the 60th minute, helping India finish the match with a 13–0 victory.
Mandeep Leads the Scoring as Harmanpreet Delivers Twice
Mandeep’s three goals made him India’s leading scorer in the match. His performance was supported by contributions from the team’s senior players and attacking unit.
Harmanpreet scored twice, including the opening goal, while Dilpreet and Hardik also registered braces. Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma and Jugraj Singh contributed one goal each.
India’s scoring pattern reflected contributions from multiple players rather than reliance on a single forward. Penalty corners were also a major feature of the performance, with Harmanpreet and Jugraj converting set-piece opportunities.
The result gives India a strong opening position in the round-robin stage, although the team will face further tests against the other participating sides before the semi-finals.
Nilakanta Sharma Announces International Retirement
The match was followed by an emotional announcement from Nilakanta Sharma, who confirmed that the tournament would mark his final appearance in the Indian jersey.
The experienced midfielder has been part of India’s international hockey setup and contributed to the team’s campaign in the opening match against Bangladesh. He also scored India’s sixth goal in the contest.
His announcement added significance to the evening, which marked the return of international hockey to Punjab for the tournament. Hockey India acknowledged his contribution to Indian hockey as he prepared to conclude his international career.
Jalandhar Hosts the Opening Day of the Tournament
The match was played at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, where the tournament opened with a cultural programme celebrating Punjab’s sporting and cultural heritage.
The opening ceremony included traditional Punjabi performances, Gatka demonstrations, music and a drone show highlighting the state’s history and hockey legacy.
The first day also featured two other league matches. Malaysia defeated China 5–4, while Japan beat South Korea 3–2.
The tournament features six teams — India, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea — competing in a single round-robin format. Each side plays the other five teams once, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals.
India to Face China on October 29
India’s next league match is against China on Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. IST in Jalandhar. The fixture will provide the defending champions with their next opportunity to build on the opening victory.
Malaysia will face South Korea earlier that day, while Bangladesh will take on Japan. League matches will continue in Jalandhar through November 2, before the tournament moves to Mohali for the semi-finals on November 4 and the bronze-medal and final matches on November 5.
India will seek to maintain their momentum as the competition progresses, with the remaining league fixtures determining the final semi-final line-up.
